Nothing should stand between you and God.

No imams, priests, rabbits or any other custodians of moral or religious leadership.

Not spiritual masters and not even your faith. Believe in your values and your rules, but never lord them over others.

If you keep breaking other people’s hearts, whatever religious duty you perform is no good. Stay away from all sorts of idolatry, for they will blur your vision.

Let God and only God be your guide. Learn the Truth, my friend, but be careful not to make a fetish out of your truths.

  3. राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी भी यही कहा करते थे रेखा जी – ‘सत्य ही ईश्वर है’ । मैंने भी सदा अपने जीवन में नैतिक मूल्यों एवं मानवीय संवेदनशीलता को ही ईश्वर का प्रतीक समझा है । एक बहुत अच्छी ग़ज़ल का एक शेर इस प्रकार है :

    सलीका ही नहीं शायद उसे महसूस करने का
    जो कहता है, ख़ुदा है तो नज़र आना ज़रूरी है

    1. आपने राष्ट्रपिता महात्मा गांधी की बहुत अच्छी बात बताई .
      अगर सब लोग आप की तरह सोचें तो धर्म के नाम पर होने कट्टरता और भ्रामक धर्म गुरुओं का वर्चस्व कम हो जाएगा . आपके विचार बड़े स्पष्ट और अच्छे लगे .
      गज़ल लाजवाब है . क्या इसे मैं अपने ब्लॉग पर share कर सकती हूँ ?
      ईश्वर को देखने की चाह रखने वाले बिजली की तार को छू कर करेंट को देखने की कोशिश क्यों नहीं कारते हैं?

      1. यह वसीम बरेलवी साहब की ग़ज़ल है रेखा जी । अगर शेयर करें तो पूरी ग़ज़ल को शेयर करें जो इस प्रकार है :

        उसूलों पे जहाँ आँच आये, टकराना ज़रूरी है
        जो ज़िन्दा हों तो फिर ज़िन्दा नज़र आना ज़रूरी है

        नई उम्रों की ख़ुदमुख़्तारियों को कौन समझाये
        कहाँ से बच के चलना है, कहाँ जाना ज़रूरी है

        थके-हारे परिन्दे जब बसेरे के लिये लौटें
        सलीक़ामन्द शाख़ों का लचक जाना ज़रूरी है

        बहुत बेबाक आँखों में त’अल्लुक़ टिक नहीं पाता
        मुहब्बत में कशिश रखने को शरमाना ज़रूरी है

        सलीक़ा ही नहीं शायद उसे महसूस करने का
        जो कहता है, ख़ुदा है तो नज़र आना ज़रूरी है

        मेरे होंठों पे अपनी प्यास रख दो और फिर सोचो
        कि इसके बाद भी दुनिया में कुछ पाना ज़रूरी है

I would beg to differ on the line:”Stay away from all sorts of idolatry, for they will blur your vision.” The sanatan dharma has seen many saints reaching the pinnacle of spiritualism through Idol worshiping. Ram Krishna Paramahamsa and Mira Bai are just two glaring examples. Though sanatan dharma also has strong roots in Niraakaar philosophy.

    1. i completely agree with you of sanatan dharm and Niraakaar philosophy. this quote is from sufism and its there view. I believe one should consider views of all but respect and inculcate the best in oneself . according to me the inspiring part of the quote is-
      “If you keep breaking other people’s hearts, whatever religious duty you perform is no good. ”

  5. My reservation is only about the one line that I mentioned. With all due respect to RUMI and his GURU Shams…one can only know that much that one has experienced. And the time and the society also plays a great role in it. Saying that ”Stay away from all sorts of idolatry, for they will blur your vision.” is all about making differentiation where as spiritualism is all about confluence, about merging not segregating. When Ram Krishna Paramahamsa says that he has experienced the visuals of Krishna,Jesus Christ and Muhammad Sahab he talks about confluence not segregation.

    To my mind most of the RUMI’s talks are observational and at the most his talks could be considered Philosophical but not 100% spiritual.

    I think that this ‘idolatry abhorring line’ has its roots in the idol devastation of Al Lat, Al Manat,and Al Uzza in the Saudi Arabia when Muhammad Sahab took the region in his control.And since RUMI and His Master must have been under the great impression of the Idolatry abhorring revolution that had taken place some 500-600 years ago of their existence. I mean, that time of society must be rife with the views against the idolatry and the line from Shams has the imprint of that anti-idolatry movement. It is not an independent view of a spiritual person.

    Anyways people are free to embrace and reject a line of thinking but in my opinion so called elevated souls should abstain from making any parochial statements…be it that era or this era.

    1. Neeraj, i am totally convinced with you, as i also go to temples (do idol worshiping).
      Nor i support idolatry abhorring line or Idol devastation or neither such views.
      I believe in Kabir’s teaching –

    2. मैं तुमसे कुछ और बातें share करना चाहूँगी , तब शायद तुम मेरी बातों को समझ सकोगे . वैसे इन बातों को यहाँ १-२ लोगों से हीं बाँटा है.

      पिछले कुछ समय ने मेरी ज़िंदगी बदल दी ( lots of blow). अभी कुछ महीने पहले लगा , अब कभी संभल नहीं पाऊँगी . फिर से अपनों के प्रेरित करने से काफी समय बाद 12 dec से फिर पढ़ना और लिखना शुरू किया .

      रूमी को मैं काफ़ी समय पहले से पढ़ रहीं हूँ . पर ऐसे में जब भी उसे पढ़ा, अलग तसल्ली और शांति मिली. इसलिए share करती रहती हूँ।

      उसने जो बातें तुम्हें अच्छी नहीं लगी , वो मैं पहले से समझ रहीं हूँ , पर quote को छेड़ना नहीं चाहा
      और यह झगड़ा तो पुराना है. हमारा धर्म तो आकार और निराकार दोनों को सम्मान देता है.

      मेरे विचार में निराकार आराधना के लिए उच्च कोटि की ध्यान की क्षमता होनी चाहिये. शायद इसलिए आकार आराधना का कॉन्सेप्ट भी दिया गया. ताकि सभी उसकी सहायता से ध्यान लगा सके.

      मैंने ‘ तुम ‘ इसलिए लिखा है क्योंकि मेरे खयाल में तुम मुझसे काफ़ी छोटे होगे. 🙂
