Book Review: Review in Perspective of Veils, Halos & Shackles

Veils, Halos & Shackles is a great anthology of international feminist poetry edited by Charles Fishman and Smita Sahay. The book was conceived in response to the horrific rape and manslaughter of Jyoti Singh Pandey in Delhi and to the unprecedented public protest that followed it.
Congratulations to Charles and my daughter Smita Sahay.

Five years ago, in January 2013, Charles Ades Fishman and Smita Sahay conceived of Veils, Halos & Shackles, dedicated to ‘Jyoti Singh Pandey, Nadia Anjuman and the uncountable number of other women and girls who have been victims of gender violence’. 

This is a two-part feature consisting of the book review and an interview with Charles Fishman and Smita Sahay. Today we carry the review to be followed by the interview tomorrow.

यह काव्य   महिलाओं पर हुई हिंसा , उत्पीड़न और भेदभाव की  घटनाओं पर आधारित  कविताओ का   संकलन हैं. महिलाओं पर  दुनिया में हो रहे दुर्व्यवहार को कविताओ  में पिरो कर, दुनिया को दिखाने की  अद्भुत और अनोखी  कोशिश हैं.

लौ दिलों में जलती रहे – महिलाओं के अपमान की कहानी सीता और द्रौपदी के काल से चली  आ रही हैं. पर आज़ इसका विकृत रुप डराने लगा हैं. इस पुस्तक का उद्देश्य हैं , हर जगह , हर काल में होनेवाली इस मानसिक विकृति को हम ना भूलें और इस जलती लौ को मशाल बना इसका सामना करे. इसके शिकार को नहीँ, दोषी को नीची नज़र से देखें. इसका सामना निर्भय हो कर करें.

24 देशों के 180 विचार लिखते कवि – नारी को सम्मान देनेवालों की कमी नहीँ हैं. इस संकलन में  दुनिया के दो  दर्जन देशों के विद्वानों -मनीषियों का योगदान हैं. उनकी भावनाओं की अभिव्यक्ति 250 से अधिक कविताओं के द्वारा हुई  हैं.

कवियों के दिल में अनछुए कोने में  झांकने का द्वार -” वेल्स हैलोज़ और शैकेल्स ” यह मार्मिक संकलन आपको उनके दिलों के दर्द भरे पहलुओं के करीब ले जायेगा. इसमें लिखने वालों में से बहुतों ने निसंकोच अपने जीवन की दर्द भरी दास्तान बयाँ की  हैं. यह वास्तव में बड़े हिम्मत की बात हैं. वरना अक्सर लोग ऐसी बातों को दबाने में यकीन रखते हैं.

पुरुषों की दुनिया  – अक्सर कुछ लोगों की गलतियों की वजह से सभी  पुरुषों पर प्रश्न चिन्ह लग जाता  हैं. पर यह महाकाव्य पुरुषों की  दुनियाँ के पुरुष कवियों की व्यथा भरी कवितायें भी सुनाता हैं उन्हीं की जुबानी. जिन महिलाओं के साथ दुर्घटनायें होती हैं.उनके परिवार के पुरुषों पर क्या बीतती हैं ?भुक्त भोगी के परिवारों और मित्रों की व्यथाएं  कैसी होती हैं ? क्या कभी ख़याल आया हैं ? उनकी वेदना और व्यथा को कविताओं का रुप दिया हैं, इस संकलन ने.

 प्रेरणा के श्रोत– दुनिया की वह आधी आबादी जिसे हम शक्ति ,दुर्गा , काली , मरियम या मदर मैरी कहते हैं.सभी और अनाम नारी इस महा रचना की प्रेरणा श्रोत हैं.

दो दूर और अलग संस्कृति के  देश के सम्पादको का सम्मिलित प्रयास  – आज़ पूरा विश्व  ग्लोबल या  वैश्विक हो गया  हैं. ऐसे में इस समस्या को  वैश्विव स्तर पर देखने का प्रयास वास्तव में प्रशंसनीय हैं.  यह पुस्तक देश , भाषा , धर्म, सम्प्रदाय, आदि के बंधन से ऊपर उठ कर महिलाओं की अनसुनी आवाज़ को बुलंदी  और हौसला देता हैं.   इस  के दोनों सम्पादक तारीफ़ के हकदार हैं.  चार्ल्स फिश्मैन और  स्मिता सहाय  वे दो नाम हैं.

 2013 में निर्भया ज्योति के गुजरने के बाद से यह वृहद अभियान शुरू हुआ. इसका गर्भ काल लम्बा था. 2016 अप्रैल में  इसका जन्म हुआ और यह पुस्तक सामने  आया. अब यह पुस्तक आमेजन पर उपलब्ध हैं – 25% की छूट के साथ.

विश्व की सर्वश्रेष्ठ कविताओं का खजाना – यह दुनिया के नामी और आम  कविओ के कविताओं का संकलन हैं. यह भुक्तभोगी कवियों  और  कवित्रियों की  दर्द भरी  वास्तविक कविताओं का संकलन हैं. जो पाठकों के दिलों में उतर जाता हैं.

अपने पैरों पर खड़ी  महाकाव्य – इस संकलन की विशेषता हैं , यह आरम्भ से अंत तक बिना किसी सहायता या अनुदान के तैयार की गई  हैं.  आज़ इस बात ज़रूरत हैं कि ऐसी पुस्तकों को शैक्षणिक संस्थानों में स्थान दिया जाये और ग्रांट व  अनुदान से प्रोत्साहित किया जाये. ताकि भविष्य में भी ऐसी पुस्तकें सामने आयें.
वैसे , सम्मान की बात हैं कि निर्भया  से उपजी यह व्यथा कविता संकलन को विदेशों में पाठ्यक्रम में शामिल किया जा रहा हैं..
