Female weeper / weeping woman / professional mourners  –  In some part of    Rajasthan, India,  women (of a specific  caste ) are hired as professional mourners . They   are know as  “rudaali” /female weeper/ weeping woman  . Their job is to publicly express grief for family members who are not permitted to display emotion due to social status.

कुछ लोग हँस  कर ,

और कुछ हँसा कर

कमाते हैं.

कुछ लोग रो कर (रुदाली )

और कुछ लोगों को रुला कर.

रुलाने वाले क्या जवाब देंगे ?

   जब

ऊपर वाला उनसे पूछेगा –

उन्होंने क्या कमाया  ?

राजस्थान में कुछ  स्थानों पर  ऐसी प्रथा हैं. जिसमें सम्पन्न परिवारों में रो कर मातम मानने  के लिये रुदाली ( जाति  विशेष की महिलायें ) बुलायी जाती हैं.

      1. it is weird as well as funny. sorry to say funny but if their tears don’t come at their loved one’s death, then whats the logic of hiring other people who have no feeling for the dead but just doing it as a drama for the sake of money. really strange world it is….

      6. I asked to my dad actually 😛..and he said it happens in some areas of rajasthan and he also told me about a movie named rudali of dimple kapadia, mother of twinkle khanna 😊..

  4. There was an advt on t.v i dont know exactly but i guess its radio mirchi’s advt in which they showed these type womans weeping . I first thought it was only to entertain us bt through ur blog i came to know that its real. Weird bt part of india 🙂

  9. I recently came across this ritual and couldn’t just believe myself. This is unbelievable. And I think such customs prevail not only in Rajasthan but in many parts of India. People just can’t get enough of these.

    1. Hi Jyotirmoy , some areas of Rajsthan is known for this ritual. Just now a blogger buddy of mine told me , that this custom was also present in some part of Punjab.

  17. बहुत ही अच्छी कविता है रेखा जी । रोने वालों ने तो अपनी रोज़ी कमाई लेकिन रुलाने वालों ने क्या कमाया ? मर्म पर चोट करता हुआ प्रश्न पूछा है आपने । यह प्रथा केवल राजस्थान में ही नहीं, पंजाब के भी कई भागों में चलती रही है । यशपाल जी के कालजयी वृहत् उपन्यास – ‘झूठा-सच’ का पहला ही प्रसंग इसी घटना को लिए हुए है जबकि लाहौर में बसे हुए एक संयुक्त परिवार की बुजुर्ग महिला के देहांत पर रोने (सियापा करने) के लिए कौलां नाऊन और उसके दल को बुलाया जाता है जिनका यह पेशा है । पूरा दृश्य अत्यंत रोचक है । उपन्यास के इस दृश्य का कालखंड 1943 में बताया गया है । इससे यह पता चलता है कि यह प्रथा कितनी पुरानी है । श्री जयनाथ नलिन के चर्चित हास्य एकांकी – ‘संवेदना सदन’ की विषय-वस्तु भी इसी प्रथा पर आधारित है । यह कैसी विडम्बना है कि परिवार के एक सदस्य के संसार से चले जाने पर अन्य सदस्यों को दुख की अनुभूति ही नहीं होती और दुख की अभिव्यक्ति के लिए भी शुल्क देकर बाहर से लोग बुलाए जाते हैं ।
